QuestionThomas,
Let me first say "Thank You" for your postings and help.
I recently acquired a well done 18Kt. white gold chain;20",1 MM box
link,3.2 grams. The clasp is stamped "18KT" to one side of the and
what appears to be "193VI" to the opposite side. Would you be so kind as to tell me what this designates?
Thank You,
Michelle
AnswerDear Michelle,
The only marking related to metal quality is the 18kt, a legal mark for 18 karat gold. The other mark is likely the makers initials and perhaps style number. The makers mark is required to be there if the quality mark (18kt) is present. Actually running down the exact manufacturer is like chasing a rabbit down a rabbit trail and the rabbit wins...considering the very large number of manufacturers within the USA and the even larger number in countries such as Greece, Italy, Thailand, China, India, etc., who export large quantities of jewelry to this country.
We have the karat but cannot pin down the maker. That is about the best to be expected unless one happens to be familiar with the particular VI mark.
God Bless and Peace. Thanks for asking. Thomas.
