Alcohol Consumption During Pregnancy: Risks and Concerns

Question
Hi Kristy

I'm 21 years old and just found out that I am 13 weeks pregnant today! I am planning on going on with the pregnancy but ever since I turned 21 I've been drinking with my girlfriends. When I drink I usually drink 1 or 2 shots and a beer or two but only have done that maybe 4-5 times on weekends, ever since  my last period which was in June '06. I've stopped drinking and will con't to do so because I want a healthy baby. Is there any possible health issues that will affect the baby? And what do you recommend taking now because I never took prenatal vitamins.

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Kristina,

Drinking is never a safe thing to do when pregnant. However, many women have done it, in early pregnancy without knowing they were pregnant. I am happy to hear, that since you have been aware that you are pregnant that you have stopped. Chances are, your baby will be just fine. These little guys in the early stages are pretty tough. However, continued alcohol useage, can lead to Fetal alchohol syndrome ..which can lead to some really serious issues with a baby.

I dont think at this point, you have much to worry about..ASLONG as you have stopped drinking alchohol all together.

As for vitamins, its of urgency that you start taking them right away. I also think you should take an extra folic acid suppliment as well. Speak to your OB or family physician about the extra folic acid. Folic acid prevents alot of severe deformities in babies, such as spina bifida, ect.

If you have anymore concerns about your baby's well being, speak to your doctor about it. A simple ultra sound is all it would take, to see how the baby is developing.

Hope this is of some help :) Take care, and congradulations on your pregnancy :)
