Mirena IUD Experience: Painful Insertion & Post-Insertion Concerns

Question
I'm 23, 2 children both caesarean sections for emergency reasons (age 4 + 6).  Was on Depo Provera for 4 years but then had Mirena coil fitted 8 weeks ago, many problems putting it in.  At one point the doctor gave up but then realised the nurse had already opened the sterile packaging so decided to have another go.  Very painful indeed.  Doc was unable to check position was correct as my cervix tightened so quickly.  Then 2 weeks of light bleeding accompanied by severe lower abdominal stabbing pains (nothing like period pains at all except same region).  Pains better after 2 weeks and bleeding stopped but still pains after intercourse and when bowels full.  Went for 6 week check (actually 7 weeks after insertion) and the doc said my threads were gone.  She has referred me for a routine scan but I'm told this could take up to 8 weeks.  I'm sure I haven't expelled the Mirena as the pains on day of insertion are still there today.  Not all the time but still after sex and at other seemingly random times.  Very painful although not long lasting - short sharp pains lasting for about 30 seconds and then subsiding.  Worse as well after exercise.  Do you think I should be waiting 8 weeks for a scan?  No bleeding since 2 weeks after insertion.

Answer
If you think the IUD may have migrated out of the uterus and is causing the pain, or traveling in your abdomen, I think that 8 weeks is too long to wait for a sonogram. Demand that a sonogram be done right away so you can localize the IUD and start making plans for its removal.
