Missing Mirena IUD: Potential Location & Pregnancy Concerns

Question
Age 25, 1 child and 24 weeks pregnant. Last period 28th july 2004.
My question is where could my mirena coil have gone? I had it inserted on 21st July 2004 and found out that i was pregnant at the beginning of September 2004. After a stay in hospital and various scans i was told that i was having a normal pregnancy and that there was no sign of my coil. I recently had another scan and was told that there was a possibility that the coil had left my uterus and was twisted up in my bowel. How likely is this and could the sharp stabbing pain i have been experiencing to one side of my belly button be from my coil? Also how safe is this?

Answer
IUDs have a tendency of migrating from the uterus and to the abdomen. Usually, however, if the coil is not seen in the uterus, it has inadvertently fallen out (often while you are having a bowel movement). Of course, if it did migrate out of the uterus and is twisted in your intestines, it may, very well, be the cause of the stabbing pain in your abdomen and it is definitely not safe. An X-ray or sonogram of your abdomen should be able to locate the Mirena. Check it out before it becomes a problem.
