Post-Mirena Removal Bleeding: What to Expect & When to Worry
QuestionHi,
I had my Mirena coil fitted after nearly 5 years with the hopes of getting pregnant, I bled after 1 day of having the IUD removed. But 4 weeks and 5 days later I have had a massive PV Bleed, is this due to the coil being removed after a long length of use, or has it stopped my chances of more children I am 34 and I had no problems with PV Bleeding like this at all before the coil was fitted. I am making myself depressed as now tests and everything are planned and no one will give me a straight answer
AnswerDear Jane,
PV bleeding simply refers to bleeding from the vagina or uterus, so it is rather non-specific. May it simply have been a very heavy first period after removal of the Mirena? It does not sound like you bled excessively after the removal, so it would not seem that there would have been an issue there. And since you are right at 4 weeks out from the removal, it would seem the normal time for a period. So - I guess I am more inclined to think maybe this is simply your body returning to a cyclic hormone pattern and shedding the uterine lining.
However, if your doctor is wanting to make sure there is no uterine infection related to the bleeding or another cause, then at least you will be able to rule that out. I would not give up hope in your abilities to get pregnant at this point - that would seem really premature with only symptom being some vaginal bleeding 4 weeks after the Mirena removal.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
