QuestionHi, I just had a physical and got a copy of my blood work. My physician said I was fine, but looking at my results, I see some things marked "high". This is a new doctor for me and frankly, I was not happy with him. He missed my cholesterol reading completely and his nurse had to show him. So I would like another opinion on what these pursue mean and if they are significant enough to pursue with another doctor.
My hemoglobin was 15.5 (normal is 12.0-15.0)
My Hematocrit was 47.6 (normal is 36.0-46.0)
My RDW was 14.6 (normal is 11.5-14.0)
Potassium was 5.4 (normal is 3.5-5.3)
Does this add up to anything that should be looked at? I am female, 43 and a smoker.
I appreciate any insight you can give.
Thanks!
AnswerHi Susan,
I believe that the elevated blood count (henatocrit and hemoglobin and RDW is from smoking. At least that is what I would attribute it to.
The potassium is a bit high either because you take in too much potassium (foods/fruits) or that the blood was collected and some of the red cells ruptured releasing the potassium. The potassium should be checked again in a month to see if it is going up or down.
