Post-D&C Recovery: Understanding Bleeding, Cramps, and When to Seek Medical Attention
QuestionMy friend miscarried on Wednesday and had a D&C on Thursday. She had cramps and stayed in bed the rest of the day Thurs. Friday she was still bleeding but no cramps. Yesterday she had some sharp cramps and slight bleeding. Today her abdominal area is tender and she is hurting instead of cramping. Could she have an infection and should she go to the emergency room or just call her ob/gyn in the morning? Thank you
AnswerAfter a miscarriage and a D&C, you can bleed for a few weeks and will have cramps until the uterus gets back to normal. Often, we give pills that will cause cramping but will help control the bleeding. If, on the other hand, there is fever and pain with a foul smelling discharge, she may have developed endometritis and should consult her doctor. Pain, alone, is not a problem. If there is pain, take Motrin or Advil and see if it helps. If not, consult yuor gynecologist.
