Understanding Luteal Phase Defect and Infertility Concerns

Question
I am 26 years old and my husband and I have been trying to concieve for about a year. I have never missed a period and usually around 27-29 day cycle, avg. 28. I am concerned because my periods always begin and end with dark brown blood. Sometimes a lot. Is this a sign of luteal-phase defect or some kind of hormone imbalance? I am worried this may be the reason I cannot concieve.

Answer
I doubt that you have a luteal phase defect. That is usually due to a shortage of progesterone and that causes your cycles to be less than 24 days, thus effecting ovulation. If you are having sex at around cycle day #13 14,15, and 16 each month, you should conceive. If you have been trying to conceive for more than 12 months, consult your gynecologist and start an infertility workup.
