Understanding a Uterine Hematoma in Early Pregnancy: Causes & Concerns
QuestionHi
Im 27 yrs old and this is my 4th pregnancy , i have had 3 normal pregnancies . I started bleeding with this pregnancy at 11 weeks and they found a hematoma measuring 5.7x6.6x3.8 which is low down in the uterus nr to the cervix why the placenta is far back in the uterus in a posterior position , baby on rgiht , hematoma on left. The bleeding seemed to have settled and all was going ok , i had some brown blood loss at 16 weeks and ultrasound which revealed the hematoma was still there measuring 5.4x6.1x3.2 so was a slight bit smaller and baby measured at right age . Im now 18 weeks and am getting a fair bit of reddish/brown bleeding every couple of days since 16 weeks. The 16 week ultrasound also revealed the hematoma had moved lower down and partly laid over the cervix. Exactly how much bleeding can a hematoma of this size cause and why does it not seem to be reabsorbing . Is there anything i can do to help the healing process and what are our chances of going full term?
AnswerDuring the formation and development of the placenta, there is often the formation of a "subchorionic hematoma" which is within the folds of the developing membranes. This usually resolves within weeks. Your hematoma appears to be slowly resolving, and it is slowly coming down towards the cervix. There is nothing to do but wait. As long as you are not bleeding profusely and not having cramps, and the baby appears to be fine and growing adequately, there is usually no problem. Just be patient. Good Luck.
