Coughing During Early Pregnancy: Safety & Relief

Question
I am only 4 or 5 weeks pregnant and am feeling fine. However I have a hacking cough - left over from a cold a few weeks earlier.  Am worried that the jerky movements will harm unborn baby.  Especially as I feel the tightness in my stomach and groin when I am having a coughing attack.  Particularly at night. I know I can't take any medicine - any help would be appreciated.  I am worried I am doing harm. Thanks.

Answer
Dear Sarah,

Your body is pretty resilient and protective of that baby during pregnancy. The tightness you feel is the abdominal muscles which are contracting when you cough.

I would actually be more concerned that you might have a lingering bronchitis or something going on. It is at least worth mentioning to your doctor at your first prenatal visit. There are a few safe medications that he/she could give you to help.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. Be well!
