Bleeding After Intercourse During Pregnancy: Causes & What to Do

Question
Dr Johnson - I am 19 weeks pregnant (first pregnancy) and am concerned about bleeding following recent intercourse (it had been several weeks since last intercourse). Immediately following sex, I went to the bathroom and noticed the blood on my inner thighs and when I urinated. It was not a heavy flow, but visible nonetheless. The next morning there was a slight hint of it when I urinated. Through it all there was no cramping. I've read online about light spotting, but I consider this to be more than just spotting. We are concerned and would appreciate your advice.

Answer
Hi Kerri,

If it was just spotting then I'd say it was probably nothing as many women spot after sex during the second and third trimesters. However because you say it was more than spotting then I advise you to definitely tell your doctor as it can be a sign of a more serious problem such as problems with the placenta.
