Hematoma Near Fetus at 8 Weeks: Understanding & Monitoring

Question
I am newly pregnant - 8 weeks -  and was told by my Dr. that I have a Hematoma next to the Fetus less than a centimeter.  Currently, I am experiencing no pain and no bleeding, do these have a tendency to grow larger as the pregancy progresses?  Please provide me with any information in which would be helpful to me during this time.  How do they begin, why do I have this?  How do they track the size of the Hematoma?  Is is normal to have this and be able to have a successful health pregancy?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Min :)

I think what you have, is called a Subchronic Hematoma. Its not uncommon at all, and many women have been diagnosed with this.

Usually, this happens when the placenta formation process occurs in early pregnancy. There can be bleeding in the folds of the placenta, thus creating a Hematoma(Blood Clot)

Anyone can can get this condition, so please dont think its you, or something you did. Its luck of the draw, and as I said earlier, its not uncommon at all. It sounds scary I know.

Usually, Hematoma's are watched through the sonogram process, where they can monitor the growth of the mass. However, some never grow, and some do, it really depends on the patient :)

And YES!! In most cases, ladies go on to have healthy babies, and great pregnancies with no complications at all.

Sometimes, cramping and heavy bleeds can occur, and if that happens then you need to seek medical attention immediately. But just know, having this condition does not mean at all, that your pregnancy is full of complications, or at immediate risk. Aslong as there is a nice strong heartbeat, then there is no reason for concern. And I am sure over the next few months, they will have that doppler out listening to your little ones heartbeat :)

Best thing you can do, is to relax when you can. Because you do have this condition, it is important not to stress yourself out, emotionally, and physically. Make sure you get lots of rest. Kick those feet up, as often as you can. Absolutely no heavy lifting, exsessive exercise, or standing for long periods of time. These are all just preventive measures, that you can take, just to prevent any unforseen issues.

You have no bleeding, or cramping and these are great indications that things are just fine. Often, many women do have what is described as "blood gushes" and cramping, and are usually put on bed rest. Even still, they go on to have healthy babies :) But considering you are not experiencing those symptoms, its an indication that this hematoma is not influencing your pregnancy, and this is great :)

Just remember, to relax, and pamper yourself, and dont over do it. I think you will be just fine :)

If you have any more concerns, Feel free to write back. Hope this was of some help, and thanks for writing!
