Understanding Abnormal hCG Levels in Early Pregnancy

Question
I am 23 years old, my husband and I have no other children and I have never been pregnant before.  Everything in my pregnancy has been fine until the other day.  I was informed my triple screen showed possible problems (17-18 weeks pregnant).  I have gotten different due dates due to the fact I haven't had steady periods for 4 years (ammenorhic for 2).  My AFP 1.07, hCG 2.88 UE3 .74.  The nurse said my ratio for risk is 1:205.  I am very confused and completely distressed, we have no family history of any disorders or Down's Syndrome.  Could my number's be off due to my hormonal imbalance over the years or being an athlete?  Thank you so very much.

Answer
Sometimes, if you are not ABSOLUTELY correct on your dates, the triple screen can be incorrect. Usually, if we get an abnormal result, we have a sonogram done to confirm whether you really are 17-18 weeks. If it is, indeed, confirmed, then I would have an amniocentesis done, which is 100% correct and will show your complete karyotype as well as the sex of the baby. If the risk for Down's syndrome is greater than 1:350 I would recommend amnio. First have the sonogram done. It has nothing to do with your family history or your hormonal imbalance ofer the years. When was the date of the first day of your last period? How does that compare to the sonogram?
