Understanding Rising HCG Levels After Miscarriage History: A Medical Perspective
QuestionI have had 2 miscarriages prior to this potential one. I had a miscarriage for my first pregnancy, two healthy pregnancies and now have recently experienced a chemical pregnancy. I am not possible having another. Here is my question. I requested that my hcg levels be monitored so 2days after taking a Home preg test (which were very faint at first then darkened after days of testing) I had blood work taken with hcg levels of 96. One week later hcg levels of 3369 one week later an ultrasound was given. The ultrasound technician said that thing were not 100% and that the ultrasound did not look normal. She was under the impression that I was 6 wks pregant at the time. Tears came and I was sent in to see a Dr. The doctor said that the ultrasound was not normal for a 6wk pregnancy but asked if my dates could be off by 3-5 days. He said that this could be a normal ultrasound for a 5 wk pregnancy. He took my hcg levels and scheduled another US for one week. The next day a nurse called me with my hcg levels but stressed that the ultrasound was not normal. She said that I was measuring a 6wk sac, had a small bleed b/t two layers, and no visible yolk was seen. She kept saying that it looked abnormal. I told her about what the dr had said and asked if she knew why he said that it could be normal for a 5wk pregnancy. She acted like I should not have hope. I then asked about my hcg levels which were now 29,983. I asked then why are my numbers so high. She said that my body is still detecting a normal pregnancy. I feel pregnant and have not had any bleeding yet or major cramping. I asked if I should just request a D and C. She said that she would check with my Dr. I got a voicemail a few hours later and the nurse said that my dr is not ready to rule out anything yet bc my numbers are so high. Could this still be a viable pregnancy or should I trust the US tech and the nurse whom both seemed to give me no hope of a viable pregnancy. This waiting period is killing me. Thanks
AnswerDear Grace,
First, I would like to apologize for the delay in answering. Unfortunately, my son required emergency surgery this past week and I have been needed as "nurse mom".
Although a few days have now passed and you may have your answer, I will give you my best suggestion with the information you have given me... since they have scheduled another ultrasound in one week, it suggests that they want to wait and see if they are able to detect heart activity and/or other expected findings at your stage of pregnancy when they do the follow-up scan. That tells me they are giving the pregnancy every chance at viability. You should do the same. Until they have determined that there is absolutely no progress or gestational growth AND the hCG levels are starting to fall (as would be expected with a failed pregnancy) I would let the pregnancy have every chance.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
