Missed Period After Birth Control: Causes & What To Do

Question
I am 26yrs old, no children trying to get pregnant. 6/24/04 was the first day of my last period this is when I stopped taking the birth control pill, I was on it for 10yrs without a break. I missed 5 periods now. I take a home pregnancy test every week, all negative. My obgyn md tells me it is normal to miss periods after the pill? I think its been too long. What can I do? I'm not ovulating so I can't get pregnant?

Answer
Usually, if you do not get your period, you do not ovulate. However, you can, indeed, ovulate even if you are not getting your period. The first thing that you should do, if you have not had a period since June, is to have your gynecologist induce your period using Provera 10mg twice a day for 5 days and you should get your period within another 10 days. Then you have to assume that you ovulate around cycle day #14. Concentrate on having sex on cycle day #13, 14, 15, or 16. A pregnancy test will not show a positive result until 14-21 days later. The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your period. You do not have to take a pregnancy test every week. Just once a month, if you believe you may have conceived. After stopping birth control pills, a woman usually reverts back to the type of cycle she had before she went on the pills. However, you should get back to having regulat periods eventually. Be patient. Good Luck.
