Understanding Repeated Pregnancies with Congenital Heart Defects: Causes & Risks
QuestionTwice in the last two years my wife and I have had two pregnancies both of the pregnancies ended up with the babies having no hearts, I don't find this to be common and to happen twice is very unbelievable. I am currently living and working in chins and have some problems with how the conduct their medical practice here. What are the chances of this and is there something we are doing wrong. This time my wife started taking pre natal multi vitamins also. But same thing please can you give me some type of reason or information
AnswerHow far pregnant was your wife? If the miscarriage occurred prior to 6 weeks gestation (from the first day of her last perod) it could have been a "blighted ovum". Prior to 6 weeks, a sonogram does not show a fetal heartbeat, but after 6 weeks, we usually see a fetus and a fetal heartbeat. A blighted ovum is a miscarriage where the baby did not form and, therefore, there was no heartbeat seen. I would have to know more about your wife's pregnancy. Did she have a sonogram? Did she have a Beta HCG test? What, exactly happened. Miscarriages occur in 15-20% of every pregnancy. There is nothing you can do to cause a miscarriage and there is nothing you can do to prevent one. If, on the other hand, the pregnancy ended later on, there may have been a reason.
