QuestionI'm 10 weeks pregnant and the doctor said the scan was showing that there wasn't a baby there but everything else was?! He then said that that it wasn't a viable pregnancy & I would soon start to bleed. What's happened & why? Surely there's time for the baby to grow as we could see the sac on the screen.
If I do lose it, will it happen again? What can I do to prevent it? Thankyou.
AnswerKaryn,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss.
It is possible that you are having a partial molar pregnancy. This is where some of the pregnancy progresses as normal, but some does not, in this case there is no foetus present. At 10 weeks a viable pregnancy would be visable on an external scan, as would a heart beat. I hate to sound bad, but there is no way thatt he foetus would start to grow at this stage.
Sometimes there is no answer to the why question, nature has its own way of natural selection. In the days before scans women would not even know they are pregnant let alone loosing. I would however speak again with your doctor. If the pregnancy in non viable then it might be necessary to have a small procedure known as evacuation of the womb, or D&C. This way the placenta and other tissue can be sent to histology for testing. If bleeding does not begin on its own, this may be physically and emotional best for you.
Every pregnancy is different, and from the details you have given me there seems no reason why in the future you will not be able to go on and have a successful pregnancy. Even if you have had a partial molar pregnany, the risk of it reoccuring are very slim. I had a partial molar pregnancy, only part of the foetus formed properly, and I have since gone on to have a healthy little boy.
I must stress that I am not in any way medically trained, and I can not make any kind of diagnosis. It is very possible there just no reasons for your pregnancy being non viable. 1 small chromosome out of place or missing could effect the deveolpment of the unborn in minor or drastic ways.
If you have any more questions about your loss then do direct them at your doctor, and he should be able to offer you some explanations as to what is happening. If you want any support on ttc once you feel ready then may I recommend to you, www.madmums.com
