AnswerWhen the sperm meets the egg and fertilizes the egg, there is passage of chromosomal material from the egg and from the sperm. If the fetus gets an X chromosome from the mother and an X chromosome from the father, the baby will be a female. If the fetus gets an X chromosome from the mother and a Y chromosome from the father, the baby will be a male. Once the genetic material is in the fetus, it does not change. Once the baby is a male, it does not change. However, it is not noticeable on sonogram until around 20 weeks gestation. If a penis or a scrotum is seen on sonogram, it is a boy.
