Mirena IUD Removal & Post-Removal Bleeding: What to Expect?

Question
Hi. I'm 29 and have one son, 20 mos. old. First day of my last period was 2/25/2005. On 2/22/2005, I had my Mirena IUD removed, as my husband and I are trying for our second child.

Because I'm a type 1 diabetic, it's important for me to know as soon as I'm pregnant, so that I can watch my sugars as closely as possible. I started using OPKs on 2/7, hoping to tell when I ovulated.  No positive yet.

Today (3/14/2005), I woke up with some bleeding and cramping, but very light, and I've been spotting off and on all day.

It's been 10 years since I had a "normal" cycle, so I don't know how long they are. (Was on the pill, then got pregnant with my first the first month off it. Got the Mirena after the birth of my first.)

My question is this: Is it possible for the Mirena to have caused a weird, anovulatory cycle? Or is this possibly implantation spotting and I simply missed my ovulation by starting my OPKs too late?

Thank you!

Answer
If the IUD was removed on February 22 and you got your period on February 25, it probably was regular cycle. Therefore, you probably ovulated around March 10 and could have conceived if you had unprotected sex on March 9,10,11, or 12. If you did conceive on one of those days, a pregnancy test will not show a positive result until 14-21 days later or after March 24. The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your next period (March 31).  Whether you are pregnant or not, you still should watch your sugars very closely. Once you do become pregnant, your obstetrician and your endocrinologist should work together to manage your diabetes. Stick to your diet meticulously and check your glucose several times per day. If you keep on top of the diabetes, you should have no problem with the pregnancy. Good Luck.
