Pilates After Subchorionic Bleeding: Safety & Recovery

Question
I had a subchorionic bleeding at 8 weeks that lasted for a day.  The doctor told me to be on pelvic rest, but no bed rest was assigned and I was allowed to work, etc.  So - I rested for a week and now am ready to return to low impact exercising that I was doing all along my pregnancy. Can Pilates potentially make things worse for the hematoma? The reason I'm asking because since I am allowed to do my daily activities - for example, driving through the bumps daily shakes up my abdomen pretty good and that's ok according to the doctor. What about Pilates?

Answer
I have not read any studies regarding the safety of exercise and subchorionic bleeding/hematoma. You need to discuss this with your OBGYN and follow her advice.

Pilates exercises that utilize the "head float" position (flexion of the thorax) can increase intra-abdominal pressure, especially as the abdominal muscles stretch to accommodate the expanding uterus. Once your tummy "pops out" then the abs will no longer provide as much support to your abdomen and spine. From this point onward, all exercises that flex the upper spine should be discontinued.

To remain fit and active during your pregnancy, choose non/low impact aerobic activities like fitness walking, elliptical trainer, stationary bike, and swimming. Prenatal yoga classes are great for staying limber and "in tune" with your changing body.
