Delayed Period After Breastfeeding: What to Expect?

Question
I just weaned my daughter 4 weeks ago and have not started my period yet. I breastfed her for 11 months. I am concerned because it took me a very long time to get pregnant and I did go through fertility treatments but they did not work. I ended up getting pregnant on my own. It was a miracle. I would like to try to have another baby as I am 35 and given my past history can't afford to wait. How long could it take for my period to come back and when should I contact my OBGYN if it hasn't returned? Also, I am just getting over a yeast infection, could hormone changes have caused this as I have not had one for many years?

Thank you for your time.

Answer
Sometimes, after weaning from nursing, you will not get your period for up to 12 months after weaning. However, if you want to get your period and have not, ask your doctor to induce your period for you using Provera 10mg twice a day for five days and you should get your period within 10 days after that. A yeast infection will not interfere with your hormones nor influence your period. Once you get your period, you can assume that ovulation will occur around 14 days later and can start trying to conceive as soon as that occurs. Good Luck.
