AnswerPAP smears and sonograms have nothing at all to do with your menstrual cycle. If you have had normal PAP smears, it means that the cells of your cervix are normal and you do not have any evidence of cervical cancer or dysplasia. A sonogram will only show if there is any abnormalities in the organs in your abdomen. It confirms whether you hafe any ovarian cysts or fibroids of the uterus. If the sonogram is normal it means that your organs are fine. However, this has nothing to do with your cycle. A menstrual cycle is considered normal if it is 21-35 days from the first day of your period until the first day of your next period. When you do not get a period, the first thing that must be done is to rule out pregnancy. If the pregnancy test is negative, then you probably have some hormonal imbalance. Usually, we try to start your period for you using Provera 10mg twice a day for five days and you should start your period within a week. However, if that does not owrk, we often have to regulate your period using hormonal means (birth control pills). Sometimes, if you stopped having your cycles, it can indicate a premature menopause and blood tests can show if that is true. If you have not had your period since September of 2003 an evaluation should be done by a gynecologist, even if your PAP smears and sonogram are excellent.
