QuestionThe lab. tech. repeated the blood test right after the first one that was weak positive and said it came out positive. Is that possible? The reason I ask these questions is because I live in Egypt and the doctors are not held to any certain standard. Also, I have lost weight due to me not being hungry. I am also not experiencing frequent urination. Is it possible for me to not have any pregnancy symptoms other than tender breasts? The first day of my last period was Jan 29/05 so could it be that its too early for any signs. I just remember my last pregnancy that ended in miscarriage and I had severe symptoms from frequent urination to extreme back aches. Again, I thank you so much for your time.

I had my third miscarriage last December. I have now become pregnant again. I took a blood test and the result was weak positive so the Dr. re-checked it and it was positive. The first day of my last period was Jan. 29/2005. My doctor has put me on Utrogestan (micronised progesterone/ 100 mg) two times a day. I have asked you questions before and you have been extremely helpful. I have two questions: What does weak positive mean, and will the Utrogestan help me carry the baby without miscarrying? Thank you so much for your time.

A weak positive pregnancy test usually means that the test was performed too early in the pregnancy. If we repeat the test a day of two later, it usually is positive. Progesterone is used to maintain the pregnancy and to avoid the chance of miscarriage. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If you have a low level of progesterone, there is a higher risk of miscarriage. So if we supplement your progesterone, it sometimes helps. It can't hurt.
AnswerIf your last period started on Janiuary 29, by now a pregnancy test would be accurate. If the test became positive, you are pregnant. It does not matter if you have symptoms or not (brest tenderness, nausea, fatigue). If you are amenorrheic and have a positive pregnancy test, you are, indeed, pregnant.
