QuestionHello Doctor,
I wanted to know that if during the 18 to 20 week ultrasound - we find abnormailities in the baby -
Is there ANY way to correct the abnormality before the baby is born?
I know that one option is to terminate the pregnancy - and the other option is to just go forward and hope for the best. However, is there a 3rd option where-in we can correct the abnormality in the womb? I understand that certain defects can never be corrected; but are there some defects that CAN be corrected; or is this never the case?
Thanks
AnswerAs technology becomes more sophisticated, there can be some amazing things done. There are reports of gene splicing to change chromosomal defects during pregnancy, in utero. However, in most centers, if you have a chromosomal abnormality or if you have a congenital abnormality in the fetus, the only optiohs are termination of the pregnancy or treatment after delivery, if a treatment exists.
