Fluid Retention & Urinary Issues in Pregnancy: Causes & Relief
QuestionAge: 34; Children: 2 = 2 c-sections; 23 weeks pregnant now
Here are my symptoms: fluid intake of at least 1 qt. of water each day along with 3 12oz glasses of cranberry juice. Little or no urge to urinate throughout the day. When I do try to urinate very little urine comes out. Throughout the day I begin to feel full and bloated with loss of appetite. BUT, after sleeping for 2-3 hours, I wake and have to go to the bathroom immediately and adequate flow is noted. In the morning I feel great with no bloating. I do experience pain and discomfort in the middle of my back mostly during the day, sometimes at night and then pain above my pubic bone mostly at night especially after urinating and some during the day. Also, I have just finished my fourth dose of antibiotics last week for bladder infection. When I'm on antibiotics I have no pubic or back pain, but still experience the urine retention and bloating. Thank-you!
AnswerYou may have had a urinary tract infection, but you have already been treated with antibiotics and I believe the discomfort is due to the position of the baby in the pelvis (pressing on the bladder). When the uterus grows out of the pelvis (within a few weeks) the pressure will be off the bladder and you should feel better. If you had a culture of your urine and the correct antibiotic was prescribed (based on culture and sensitivity) the bladder infection should have resolved.
