Lovenox and Bleeding During Pregnancy: A Concerned Patient's Experience

Question
I am 5 weeks pregnant and just recently started on lovenox bc I have the Leitin factor 5 gene (blood clots).  I have had vaginal bleeding, more than spotting since I started the med.  My specialist said it is a coincidence that I am on lovenox and the vaginal bleeding doesn't have anything to do with it.  But I am worried.  I went to my fertility dtr. and we saw the gestational sac and my bw was at 641 for beta.  Which is good but I'm bleeding again...not a full flow but more than spotting.  I got pg throught IVF.  Please give me any insight on the use of lovenox and the bleeding.  thanks.

Answer
Gigi,

Congrats on your successful IVF!
I agree with your doc that the bleeding and lovenox are not necessarily related.  If you are having frequent u/s, the best thing you can do is wait and see.  Bleeding is fairly common during the first trimester, and although it can indicate a problem, it doesn't always mean there is one.  Lovenox will not make you bleed, it will just slow down your clotting mechanisms when something else makes you bleed. This protects the baby because your Factor 5 Leiden.  The Factor 5 leiden causes an increase risk for clotting during your pregnancy.  This could be in the form of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary emboli, clots in the placenta, cord, or baby. (Although in the baby is usually dependent on whether or not the baby inherited the gene.)
Bleeding during the first trimester is sometimes caused by a subchorionic hematoma, which is frequently the result of a clot.  For this reason, Lovenox can actually stop bleeding instead of increasing it!

I hope I have given you at least a little bit of information.  Good luck and I hope the best for you and your little bean!
