Pregnancy-Related Taste Changes: Metallic to Creamy - Seeking Answers
QuestionI am 40 years old and pregnant for the 1st time, currently eight and a half weeks. Since January I have had problems with my mouth: excess salivation, tingling, a strong metallic taste. I have seen the GP and dentist, had antibiotics and all dental reapirs as well as blood tests for throid function and diabetees. No answers other than mild anaemia. I became pregnant in March since which time things have changed. the taste is now creamy rather than metallic most of the time and the excess salivation has reduced with a frothing sensation in my mouth now most of the time. the creamy taste makes me feel very sick since I hate dairy products and it's really getting me down. I don't have morning sickness but find I'm constantly eating to try to get rid of or distract myself from the tast in my mouth and end up feeling bloated and fed up. Any ideas would be gratefully received.
AnswerExcessive salivation ("ptyalism"), usually accompanied by a metallic taste in your mouth, is commonly seen during early pregnancy. In some groups of people, this is more pronounced than in others. There are some medications (Belladonna extract) that may decrease the amount of ptyalism, however, it will usually dissipate as the pregnancy progresses. It is not dangerous, however annoying it may be.
