Mylanta & Pregnancy: Potential Risks & Concerns

Question
Hi Brenda

My period started at March 17, and I had taken Mylanta from 3/28-4/3( more than a week) for stomach pain and release of gas. Today I had positive pregnancy test.

The Mylanta contains Aluminum Hydroxide 400mg, Magnesium Hydroxide 400mg and Simethicone 40mg per 5ml.  I took 4 times a day and 2 teapoons each time.

Now I am so worry that the fetus may be affected by the medication I took. What possible damage would cause the baby? or it would cause misscarriage?

Thanks

Answer
Dear Marget,

If you have a regular menstrual history of 28 day cycles and your LMP was 3/17, then I calculate that your estimated conception date was 3/31. This gives you an estimated due date of 12/22/09 and makes you approximately 4 weeks, 2 days along today. Congratulations!

Here's the thing, the fertilized egg would not even have implanted in your uterus yet at the time of the ingestion of the Mylanta. And -there is a fairly common theory amongst health care providers called the "all-or-nothing phenomenon". Essentially this refers to a window of time in the first 2-3 weeks after conception when there is none of the crucial fetal development going on. During this window, if the new fetus is exposed to anything which will prove to be "defective", the strong likelihood is that it will spontaneously abort. However, in most cases, this window allows for great latitude. My personal suspicion is it was a nature-made, divine protection since most women will not know they are pregnant for at least 2-3 weeks after conception has occurred.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.

Brenda
