Genital Lump: Causes, Symptoms & What to Do - Expert Advice

Question
I am 20, I have no children and I just started my menstrual cycle yesterday (wednesday).  I noticed this morning when I was showering and cleaning myself that there is a lump in that area. It hurts and feels like a cyst but I'm scared that it could be something more serious like herpes or something. It's red and it feels like the lump is under the skin.  What could it be?

Answer
A lump in your genital area may be merely a hair follicle cyst, a bartholin's gland cyst, or a vessicle (such as herpes). Since I can't diagnose it without seeing it, if it bothers you, make an appointment with a gynecologist and have it identified. If it is a herpetic lesion, it usually will be quite painful and will open up, leaving a "crater". Try sitz baths, for now (warm clean water that you sit in for 10 minutes).
