Armpit Swelling After Cold/Flu: Causes & What to Do

Question
Recently I had a bad cold/flu, sore throat, cough, laryngitis, slight fever, etc.  I
took my temperature with a thermometer under the arm, and since I was all
bundled up with sweaters and blankets may have pressed the thermometer
too hard into my armpit.  Right after that (the next day or so) I began to
notice pain and a swollen lump in my armpit.  It is quite painful and in a few
days has swollen to the size of a quarter.  Is it possible that I injured myself
when I was taking my temperature or should I be worried about breast
cancer?  I am very nervous about this since I've read that a lump in the armpit
can be cancer, but is it normal for it to appear so suddenly from one day to
the next?

Answer
Since this lump appeared suddenly and quickly and in connection with a general virus infection, it is most probably connected with that infection rather than any kind of cancer. If the lump shrinks when your infection has passed away you most probably do not need to worry. If not bring it to the attention of a dr.! Good luck!
