Cysts and Fertility: Understanding Potential Impacts & When to Seek Medical Advice

Question
I have I guess what is a cyst.  I notice in probably 2yrs ago.  It comes before my period.  Its always in the same spot.  Now I noticed a second one in the same area.  I've been trying to have a baby for the past 7months with no luck.  Could this be causing problems and should I be worried about the cyst.

Answer
Hello Maria from the U.S.,

How is it that you know there is a cyst?  Usually these can only be diagnosed by pelvic exam or ultrasound.  Have you had these?

If there is a persistent cyst present, it is worrisome because it could indicate some type of ovarian tumor.  It is probably not a cancerous tumor because if you had ovarian cancer you would be dead by now.  Ovarian cancer is very aggressive.  If it is a tumor then it is probably a benign tumor.  In any case, it needs to be removed.  I would recommend that you see a Gynecologist about this.

Ovarian tumors or cysts usually don't impair fertility but that depends on what type it is.  For example, there is a cyst caused by endometriosis, called enodmetrioma, which causes severe pelvic scar tissue formation and can impair fertility.  I hope that answers your questions.
