Clomid & HSG for PCOS: Can Clomid Be Prescribed Without an HSG Test?

I am 25 years old and have been diagnosed with pcos.  My mother had it.  My dr. prescribed 500 mg of metformin 2x per day.  She said she will not prescribe clomid without an hsg.  I am not comfortable with this test.  Can clomid be prescribed prior to the hsg test? I have no children.  My last mens. cycle began july 21

There is no contraindication to prescribing Clomid without first performing an HSG. However, the decision is made by the individual practitioner. For PCOS, I usually start metformin at the same dosage you are on , as well as Clomid 100mg on cycle day #5,6,7,8, and 9. If there is no pregnancy within two months, I raise the dosage of Clomid to 150mg for another two months. If there is no success, I do not continue the Clomid. However, I can see the reason why your doctor requested an HSG first. It is silly to progress if your tubes are blocked.
