Clomid and Metformin for Fertility: What You Need to Know

Question
I am 39yrs old and have two beautiful daughters (3yrs, and 18months) with my husband.  In an effort to have a third child, we have been off the pill since April 2008 and are not yet pregnant.  I spoke with my OB/Gyn who is willing to give me Clomid due to my age (we have no other risk factors, no PCOS, no sperm count problems etc).  I was told recently by a coworker that Clomid only works with (or works better with) Metformin.  Is that true generally true, or true primarily for women with PCOS? Are my chances of conceiving improved if I take metformin with the Clomid?

Answer
Hello,

Clomid on its own can work for many people.  It has about a 15% success rate and generally works if you don't ovulate normally.  It only needs to be used with Metformin for certain people, depending on your situation, such as having PCOS.  Your doctor would prescribe it if necessary but it doesn't sound like you'd need it.
