Clomid and Progesterone for Fertility: A Patient's Story

Question
Hello.  I am a 29 year old female with a previous pregnancy which ended at 12 weeks on7/3/08 due to neural tube defect.  My husband and I have been ttc since 8/08 with no success.  I pushed my ob for testing as I begin to spot 2-3 days before my period is due.  My cd 3 was normal.  my progesterone test at 6dpo was 6.98.  She said this is within the normal range bordering on low.  After a clean ultrasound she prescribed me Clomid, which I am now taking.  I have set up an appointment with an RE in May if no success.  My question is will the Clomid supplement my hormones enough to raise the progesterone sufficiently, or is there something else I should ask for?  Also, why was I able to get pregnant before even though I had spotting issues then too?  Thank you.

Answer
Hello,

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.  Unfortunately, Clomid will not necessarily increase your progesterone levels.  Some women are prescribed progesterone separately if their levels are low, to help maintain the pregnancy.  It is usually started just after ovulation in case pregnancy occurs.  It can be given through injection, vaginal tablet or cream.  There's no clear answer as to why you got pregnant before and are having difficulty now.  Sometimes it takes awhile even if there is nothing wrong.  Hopefully the Clomid will help, and ask the RE about progesterone supplementation if no success this cycle. Good luck.
