Ovulation Timing After a Late Period: A Guide for Women

Question
I emailed you yesterday. I was 4 days late. Today I started my period. I had been on a 29 day cycle, but this month I started late. My last period started August 6. My question is this: How do I now calculate when I should ovulate? Should I just get a bunch of ovulation sticks and use them everyday starting in about a week? Also, I heard that men should give a 24 hour period between intercourse to "replenish" the sperm. Thanks

I am 30 years old, one pregnancy, terminated at 8 weeks about 2.5 years ago.

Answer
If your last period started on August 6 and you started the present period on September 8, then you have a 34 day cycle, this month. That means that you ovulated fourteen days ago, which was cycle day #20. However, you need to chart at least three months and take the average length of your cycle to see a trend. I would suggest that you get the ovulation predictor kit and start testing on cycle day #14 (testing in one week is too early). Once you know your ovulation day, concentrate on having intercourse every other day. The 24 hours rest period allows your partner to replenish his sperm reserves. You are correct. Good Luci. Remember that a cycle is considered normal if it is 21-35 days in length and that ovulation occurs fourteen days PRIOR TO the first day of your period.
