Late Period & Birth Control: What to Do After Starting Pills Early

Question
my question is basically this: my last period was late (on around day 40 or so), i called my md and they told me to wait until the end of the month take a preg test and either start my bc pills when my period came or at the begining of the month.  so i got frustrated took a test and started the pills(3 days before the begining of the new month) then my period started 2 days later. so now ive been on for @ 13 days. do i need to stop and restart the pills or will it work itself out?

Answer
Dear Amber,

It sounds like your cycles are a bit messed up - commonly referred to as a hormonal imbalance.  :-)  My suggestion would be to continue with this pack of BCPs - then you may or may not have a full period when you are supposed to, since you are bleeding quite a bit now. But stay on this pack, take the scheduled week off, then start another pack as normal. Hopefully, your cycles will regulate after a month or two on the BCP. If it makes you feel better, take another pregnancy test right before starting the next pack.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
