Prolonged Period: Causes, Concerns & When to Seek Medical Advice

Question
25 yrs old, no children ( 1 miscarriage), still on my period (14th day).

I am concerned b/c my period was a little late and it has lasted for 14 days.  My normal periods only last 4 to 5 days.  It has seemed a little lighter than normal.  I called my OBGYN and had some blood work done and havent heard back from her for 2 days.  I am very concerned and I think I have worried myself from reading things on the internet. What could be causing this?

Answer
A period is considered normal if it does not last longer than 14 days at a time. If your period has been lasting for more than 14 days, you probably have some hormonal imbalance and your doctor should give your progesterone (Provera) 10mg twice a day for 5 days. You will bleed heavier for a few days, and then it should stop. If it occurs again next month, you should have the same treatment, but then should start birth control pills to regualte your cycle. At your age, there is no other cause for the heavier bleeding. Don't worry.
