No Period After Negative Pregnancy Test: Possible Causes & What to Do

Question
i am 27 years old.  the first day of my last menstrual period was september 2, 2005.  i was due to start my period on september 30, by october 2nd at the latest.  i took a home pregnancy test on october 2nd, results negative.  took another on october 6th, still negative.  went to the doctor today (october 10th) for a blood test (qualitative), it was also negative.  the doctor said i could have had an anovluatory cycle, resulting in no period.  i have had symptoms, swollen breasts, nausea, bloating, lower abdominal pain, back pain, headaches; but zero cramping.  what is going on?  doc said to give it another cycle, and if i still haven't started to come in for another blood test.

Answer
If two urine pregnancy tests as well as a blood test for pregnancy showed negative results a week after you were due for your period, you ar e definitely not pregnant, in spite of your symptoms. I agree with your doctor. If you do not get your period next month, repeat the blood test twice, 48 hours apart. If there is a doubling of the results in 48 hours, it indicates a viable pregnancy. If the results are both less than 5, you were never pregnant. It sounds like an anovulatory cycle, or some hormonal imbalance this month. That is perfectly normal and occurs from time to time. Don't worry.
