Understanding Negative Pregnancy Tests & Irregular Cycles
QuestionHi, I am 33 years old, no children and my last period began on 6th July. My partner and I have been trying to conceive since February and for the last 3 months I have been using an ovulation test kit. I suspected I was ovulating 2 days before my period was due ( Which seemed unusual)I tested and I was correct. My partner and I made love and my period has not yet arrived. I took a HPT 2 days after my missed period and it was negative and again 7 days later and it was still negative. However for the last week I have felt totally exhausted, my emotions are all over the place and I'm very irritable. I know we want a baby very much, so i could be imagining all this. However my cycle is always 28 days and I have only missed an entire period 3 times in my life! Is it possible to ovulate so late in a cycle? Please help as i am going potty!
Many thanks
Jo
AnswerYou cannot be ovulating 2 days prior to getting your period. If you have a regular 28 day cycle (from the first day of your period until the first day of your next period) ovlation occurs on cycle day #14. The length of time from ovulation to the start of your period is called the "luteal phase" and is ALWAYS 14 days.If you have a short luteal phase, it may mean that you have a deficiency of progesterone and should speak to your gynecologist about it. You may need progesterone supplementation. If you ovulate on cycle day #14, you can become pregnant on cycle day #13,14,15, or 16. If the ovulation kit showed an LH surge 2 days prior to your peroid, something is wrong with your ovulation predictor kit or something is abnormal about your luteal phase.. If your last period started on July 6, you were due for your next period on August 2.(Since you regularly have a 28 day cycle). The earliest that you could have ovulated would have been on July 19 and you could have conceived on July 18,19,20, or 21. If you think that you ovulated on July 22, then a pregnancy test would not show a positive result until 14-21 days later, or between August 2-9. If the pregnancy test on august 9 was negative, you are not pregnant. If this is all confusing, please discuss it with your gynecologist. Good Luck to you.
