Understanding Fetal Development & Concerns During Pregnancy: A Doctor's Perspective

Question
DEAR DOCTOR, I'M RIGHT NOW 12 WEEKS PREGNANT. I'M 34 YRS OLD & MY WEIGHT IS95KGS & I HAVE A 7 YRS OLD SON. THE PROBLEM IS THAT IN 2003 I'D HAD A MISCARRIAGE, SO MY DOC IS TAKING EXTRA PRECAUTION & I'M ON OVUTRIG 5000 INJ. BUT MY GREATEST PROBLEM IS THAT I CANNOT GET SLEEP AT ALL DURING THE NIGHT & SO FROM PAST 28 DAYS I'M HAVING MY REGULAR SLEEPING PILL. I'D LIKE TO KNOW THAT HAS THERE BEEN ANY ABNORMALITY WITH THE FETUS. CAN I KNOW THIS FROM ANY SOUGHT OF BLOOD TEST, SIMPLE SONOGRAPHY OR A 3D SONOGRAPHY. I CANNOT SOMEHOW SRVIVE WITHOUT TAKING SLEEPING PILLS. PLEASE ADVISE.

Answer
I would rather that, if you cannot sleep) try Benadryl 50mg at bedtime rather than any other sleeping pills. I do not know, offhand, the risks to the fetus of Ovutrig, but most sleep meds do cause problems with the baby. There is no way at 12 weeks to tell if the medications had an effect. A sonogram will not show anything. I would suggest that you stop the ones you are taking and try the Bendryl. It might not work as well, but it is safe.
