QuestionHi,
My last menstrual period was Nov 18, 2005. After 3 years of
trying, my husband I are pregnant with our first baby. (I had one
ectopic pregnancy 2 years ago.) I am now 12 weeks pregnant
and my dog jumped on my stomach today. It really upset me
because I am afraid the blow could tear the placenta from the
wall of my uterus or hurt the baby. This happened about one
hour ago and I am not bleeding and I don't think I have any pain
(it's sort of hard to distinguish intestinal discomfort from
something I should be concerned about.)
In the past 7 weeks, I have experienced spotting twice that has
resolved within a week of starting each time. I have also had
ultrasounds that have confirmed a heartbeat. The only reason I
mention the spotting is because I am concerned that this might
mean my pregnancy is more fragile than some and that a blow
to the stomach could cause more harm.
Also, my dog is a Chihuahua. He weighs about 10 pounds.
Do you think everything is OK? I shouldn't be worried unless I
start bleeding red blood, correct?
Thank you. I really appreciate any reassurance you can give me.
AnswerThe fetus is well protected in a sea of amniotic fluid surrounded by a thick muscle (the myometrium), which is further protected by your abdominal muscles and adipose tissue. It is extremely rare to have a placental tear if a 10lb dog jumps on your abdomen. As long as you are not have heavy vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping, I would not worry. It is common to have some spotting in early pregnancy. As long as it stops, and there is adequate growth of the fetus and a good fetal heartbeat, you should not worry. Good Luck.
