Cold During Early Pregnancy: Is It Harmful?

Question
I am 4 weeks and 3 days pregnant and got a cold - muscle aches, sore throat, sneezing, etc.  Could there be any ill effects on the developing fetus from this viral illness?  This is my first pregnancy, so naturally I am concerned and worried.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Lena :)

Even though you are feeling under the weather, your baby is just fine :)

Unfortuently, from time to time ladies find themselves with a cold or flu during pregnancy.

This in will no way harm your baby. However, if you are throwing up constantly, or have severe diareah then dyhdration is a concern, but other then that there are no serious issues to be concerned about with your baby.

Just keep in mind, that you cannot take cold medication, unless its been okay'd by your doctor. Some over the counter medications like cough medicines, or antihistamines can be harmful to an unborn child.

However, you can take tylonol, regular strength for your aches and pains, and its 100% safe to take during pregnancy.

Hope this is of some help, and I Hope you feel better soon :)

Thanks for writing ..
