Broomball and Pregnancy: Safe to Continue?

Question
I am 6 weeks pregnant and broomball starts in 2 weeks. Can I play without harming the baby? I play twice a week on co-ed broomball team. I have been playing for 7 years now. I also play softball and volleyball in the summer.

Answer
Dear KC,

I'm afraid I'm completely ignorant about broomball! I'm not really sure what it is or what it involves. For the most part, you should be able to engage in MOST activities that you participated in before getting pregnant. HOWEVER, any contact sport would obviously be cautioned against.

According to the American Pregnancy Association: Women who are pregnant are encouraged to avoid activities that may allow direct trauma to the abdomen. Contact sports pose a significant risk of trauma to the abdomen; therefore it is recommended that you avoid contact sports during pregnancy.

Also: Activities With Risks of Falling - Ice skating, roller blading, rock climbing, and other activities that have higher risks of falling should be avoided during pregnancy. Check with your health care provider for specific recommendations about a hobby or activity that poses a risk of falling.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. Please write again with any additional questions. Have a happy Christmas season.
