Question -
I am 19yrs old. My last period was Dec. 25, 2005.
I had miscarried on Nov. 11 and had a D&C. On Dec. 25, I had a very long, and heavy period. Now here it is Feb. 11, 2006. And I havn't had a period since than. I have been sexually active but I also have taken 2 preganacy test that have been negative. One of which was at my doctors. She told me to come back in three mons. if I havn't started my period yet. Now, I was wondering if there is any possible way that I could be pregnant. I have some symtoms, but none of which are tender breast. I know that last time I was pregnant the only symtom I call is tender breast. So basically I'm wonder your opinion on this topic.
Answer -
If your last period (after the D&C) started on December 25, you would have ovulated around January 7 and could have conceived if you had sex between January 6 and January 9. If ou did become pregnant, a pregnancy test would not show a positive result until 14-21 days later. The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your period. You were due for your next period on January 21, so a pregnancy test should have been accurate after January 28. If you have any symptoms (breast tenderness, fatigue, or nausea) or you have any doubts, take two blood tests for pregnancy (Beta HCG), 48 hours apart. If there is a doubling of the results in 48 hours, it indicates a new, viable pregnancy. If there is a halving of the results in 48 hours, it indicates a miscarriage. If both results are less than 5, you were not pregnant. If  the tests have been negative, and you still do not start bleeding in a month, take another pregnancy test.

I have a follow up question. Lets say Im not pregnant but I still havent started my period. Could that effect me medically and emotionally?

Answer
If you are definitely not pregnant, and have not started your next period, you can ask your gynecolist to induce your period for you (with Provera 10mg twice a day for 5 days) and you should get your period within 10 days.  Even if you do not get your period for awhile, it will not effect you medically or emotionally. However, it is good to get a period every month.  If you are not trying to conceive at this time, you might benefit from starting birth control pills until you are ready to conceive.
