Question
Hi, My wife is 5 weeks, 5 days pregnant, no sac found today 02/15/2006, no cramping, no bleeding, doctor says that, may be ectopic pregnancy, My wife is saying that no cramping, how can she say, ectopic pregnancy...
Pls advice what should I do...

Answer
If your wife has had a positive pregnancy test and there is no sac seen at 5-6 weeks gestation (from the first day of her last period), then her doctor must consider that the pregnancy is somewhere other than the uterus, even if she has had no bleeding or cramps. If she is not having symptoms (pain), I would definitely wait another week and repeat the sonogram. After 6 weeks gestation, we usually see a fetus and a fetal heartbeat on sonogram. At 5.5 weeks, we usually only see an empty gestational sac. if they did not see any sac, it points to the possibility of a tubal pregnancy, if the pregnancy test is still positive. You may aslo want to take two blood tests for pregnancy (Beta HCG) 48 hours apart. If there is a doubling of the results in 48 hours, it indicates a viable pregnancy. If there is a halving of the results in 48 hours, it can indicate a blighted ovum (miscarriage). If there is a leveling off of the results in 48 hours, it can indicate an ectopic pregnancy. If both results are less than 5, it means she was never pregnant.
