QuestionMy ultrasound was done on May 4th - and I should have been 7 weeks gestation, but the ultrasound showed only 5 weeks - with no yolk sack or heartbeat - I definitely know I ovulated on April 1st no question - so is it 100% certain that there is a problem if there is no heartbeat at 7 weeks gestation? Thank you so much for such a quick response!

Question -
I'm 37 - I have one son (age 22 months) the date of my last period was 3/15/06
I had an ultrasound at my first prenatal appt. and it should have showed 7 weeks - however the entire sack measured 9mm - the doctor stated I was only 5 weeks gestational - he could not see a yolk sack or heartbeat - the dr. stated if I was positive on my dates (which I am) that it would indicate a genetic problem and that is why the embryo is not growing - he was 100% certain and stated that I would end up aborting the embryo probably by 3 months. He is going to check again in 2 weeks - but I feel like I am just waiting for a confirmation of the bad news. Can you give me your opinion and do you think there is any hope? Thanks!

If your last period started on March 15, you would have ovulated around March 28 and could have conceived if you had sex on March 27,28,29, or 30. You did not mention the date of your first visit and sonogrqm so I can't comment on the accuracy of the sonogram. If you were 7 weeks by dates, then the sonogram would have been done on April 4. Prior to 6 weeks gestation, we usually only see an empty gestational sac but no fetus or fetal hearteat. If the sonogram did not see a fetus, you may have ovulated later than March 28. This can occur if your cycle is longer than 28 days from the start of one to the start of the next. I agree thatyou will have to do another sonogram in two weeks. By then, if there is a fetus and a fetal heartbeat, you will be reassured. If there is no fetus or no heartbeat, it is not a viable pregnancy. I would still repeat the sonogram after 12 weeks.
AnswerOften, we do not see a fetal heartbeat when the sonogram is taken. I still wold wait for 12 weeks (from your last period) and repeat the sonogram. By then, there should be a fetal heartbeat. If not, it is a non viable prengnancy. If the soniogram on May 3 showed a 5 week old preganncy, we wouold not have seen anything but an empty gestational sac. After 6 weeks we would see a fetus and a fetal heartbeat. It is very confusingm, if you are absolutely sure of your dates and when you ovulated. The next sonoram will clear it up.if we do not see a heartbeat and you really are more than 6 week from your last period, theer is definitely a problem. Be patient.
