Understanding Chemical Pregnancies: Symptoms, Causes & What to Expect

Question
"Hi Brenda,
I am Sunitha.M , from USA. I took the pregnancy test at home on 10 th
of july 2007, and found positive. but just after 1 week,ie on 17th of
july ,i had severe cramps and
bleeding ,I went to the lady doctor  in Nashua for blood test and she
told,that i had chemical pregnancy.After 1 week i got the blood test
results, that showed my HGC level as 24.
I did a lot of house hold work and was getting tired from three days
before i had heavy periods. Could this be the reason for chemical
pregnancy.please tell me, so that i can be cautious when i conceive next time.
My mother-in-law said that the pregnancy will be confirmed only after 3
months, and that this bleeding is just a normal menses. Is that
true, that i was not pregnanct even when my hgc was reported to be 24,when i
took the blood test on 17th of July 2006 during heavy periods.

Answer
Dear Sunitha,

I believe I answered most of this same question from you yesterday, but you have added a bit, so I will address it for you. A pregnancy can be confirmed well before three months time, especially now that we have ultrasound technology. Via ultrasound, the gestational sac can typically be visualized as early as 4.5 weeks of gestation and the yolk sac at about 5 weeks. The embryo can usually be observed and measured by about 5.5 weeks. A visible heartbeat can often be seen and detected by ultrasound at about 6 weeks and is usually clearly detectable by 7 weeks. Your situation - a chemical pregnancy -  was simply a very early miscarriage that happens for unknown reasons. More than likely it is due to issues with the fertilized egg, such as chromosomal abnormalities.

Hope that helps. Be well!

Brenda
