Skipping Periods with Birth Control: A Cautionary Story & What to Do

Question
I'm 18, no kids & the duration of my last menstral period was: 2/6/06 - 2/24/06.  I'm currently on OB TriCyclen-low

I heard that if you skip your last week of pills (the green ones) on your birth control, and go into your next month pack, then you will not have a period.  Well I tryed this and something went INCREDIBLY wrong!  I had my mentrustral cycle for about 2-3 weeks straight, and finally I stoped but my next cycle is due to start.

Am I in any danger now that I've stopped my cycle?
Are the green pills really just SUGAR pills?

and yes, I know not to do this again!

Answer
You do not have to worry. Usually, if you take pill #1-21 and then immediately start a new pack, without taking the placebo pills (usually iron, not sugar), you will not get your period. You can continue doing this until you want to get your period, at which time you can just stop the pills and you should get your period. You may have built up your endometrium and, when you did get your period, it was very heavy and lasted 2-3 weeks. I don't know what you did. You should stop everything until you get your period and then start a new pack on the Sunday following the first day of your period. Within a month, you will be back on track.
