Skipping Your Period on Birth Control: What to Know
QuestionI finished the 3 first weeks of birth control pills. I was going out of town with my boyfriend and had an extra week of pills from a couple months ago, so I took those instead of the placebo pills in order to skip my period when I was at the beach. I finished the extra week that Saturday. We had sex Sunday morning. I thought I would start my period a few days later but didn't. I took a pregnancy test when I didn't get my period and it was negative (I know it wouldn't show if I got pregnant from that weekend, but I know I wasn't pregnant yet). If I am not pregnant, when should I get my period? Is it possible to get pregnant from what I did? I suppose I should mention we have not had sex since that weekend.
AnswerSometimes women don't get a period when they're on birth control pills. It has to do with the uterine lining being thin from the pill. I think that's probably why you didn't get your period. So it's possible that you won't get your period until the end of your next pack, and it's possible that you won't get more periods as long as you're taking this pill. If you want to get periods, ask your doctor about switching to a different pill. You're more likely to miss periods on certain pills. Taking an extra week of pills doesn't make pregnancy any more likely, and since your test was negative, I don't think you're pregnant. I hope that's helpful.
