Irregular Periods & Heavy Bleeding at 22: Causes & What to Do

Question
I am 22 years with no children. I started my period on 10/23/05 and it is still going on now. I have irregular periods and bleed all through the month. Some days are light and I dont need a tampon so I just use panty liners. This usually occurs daily. Somedays I do use a tampon, but nothing heavy. Right now I am bleeding heavily (that is why I think I am starting my period). I have changed 4 tampons in the past 3 hours. I have not had a heavy period like this in over 3 months. The last one I had the tampons were not doing any good. I was changing them like every 10 minutes. Every heavy period I have is like that. I cant even go to work they are so bad.  I have been going to the Gyno recently and my pap came back abnormal. I have an appt. to get a biopsy in about two weeks. I am more worried about my periods than anything. I also have not been able to conceive yet either. I have tried and nothing happens. I asked my OBGYN about it and she took some blood to test my hormone and thyroid levels but she said those were fine. She has not said anything else about it. I also tested + for HPV. I asked her if that had anything to do with me being infertile, she said no. I actually do not know if I am infertile but it seems that way. I want to be able to have children and normal periods. I am trying to switch my Obgyn but everthing else is booked until next year. ? Help

Answer
If you have such heavy periods , or if you bleed througout the month, you should be evaluated and treated. I usually would give Provera 10mg twice a day for 5 days, and  you should bleed heavily for a few more days and then stop. Then you should go on birth control pills for a few months to regulate your cycle. After you have a  normal 28 day cycle, you can stop the pills and try to conceive. We usually do not start an infertility workup until you have been actively trying to conceive for a full 12 months. (That is really only 12 days of ovulation). You said that your period started on October 22, which is only 1 day of bleeding. Keep a careful record of all the days you bleed and show this record to your gyn. A period is considered normal if the bleeding  is less than 14 days at a time.
